Making It: Tools of a Picture Book Illustrator

7

Hello, again! I had to step away for a minute to have a little mental reset. Anyone else feeling the same?

I’m still in the process of understanding how I can share stuff in a way that feels authentic and meaningful, and also how it can best be of service to y’all. Honestly, I’m not looking to make more work for myself. I’d love this to be more of a fun distraction, and I’m hoping it serves that purpose for anyone who comes along. I really appreciate everyone who has been so supportive via comments and messages. Your generosity and participation made it possible for me to start this side quest, and is pushing me to sustain it as I work through how to find my groove in this new medium.

Speaking of mediums, this post is inspired by questions and comments that I often receive when sharing my art. Folks are always interested in how I make things, specifically the actual materials, tools, and supplies I use. This is the first in a series I’m calling Making It, in which I plan to give a more in-depth look into my process for paid subscribers.

“It’s not about the cards you’re dealt, but how you play the hand.”

— Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

This is one of the mottos I live by. I think what this quote is getting at is that it’s not what you have, but what you make of it. I’ve been making things for as long as I can remember, and I find that limitations often inspire the most creativity. In a way, they free you up, because they give you guidelines to work within, and work around. Having less gives you an opportunity to be more resourceful and think outside the box.

What I know for sure is that you don’t need the fanciest paints or brushes to make something meaningful, or that connects with an audience. I‘m not convinced that it’s the best materials that make the best art.

So, let’s get into it. Here are some tools that are always in stock in my studio at the moment.
